Kathmandu, Nepal — December 7: The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude-4.1 earthquake struck Nepal on Sunday morning. According to NCS’s post on X, the quake occurred at 08:13:04 IST at latitude 29.59 N and longitude 80.83 E, at a shallow depth of 5 km.
NCS summarized the event: “EQ of M: 4.1, On: 07/12/2025 08:13:04 IST, Lat: 29.59 N, Long: 80.83 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal,” and recommended users download the BhooKamp app for additional information.
The agency noted recent seismic activity in the region: on November 30 a magnitude-4.2 quake was recorded at 11:54:03 IST (lat 29.34 N, long 81.41 E, depth 10 km), and on November 6 a magnitude-3.6 event occurred at a depth of 10 km.
Shallow earthquakes, those occurring near the surface, typically produce stronger ground shaking and can cause more damage and casualties than deeper quakes because less energy is dissipated before reaching the surface.
Nepal is especially prone to earthquakes because it sits on the convergent boundary where the Indian Plate collides with and subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate. The resulting pressure and strain generate frequent seismic activity and drive the uplift of the Himalayan range. The country has a long history of earthquakes, including the catastrophic 2015 quake.
