Two teenagers, 16 and 18, were shot dead inside an underground parking lot in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood on the night of May 10 in what investigators say was a targeted, gang-related attack.
Surrey Police responded to reports of gunfire at about 10:00 pm in the 7000-block of 133B Street near 70 Avenue and found the victims with gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by officers and paramedics, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities and Canadian media have not released the victims’ names; community sources said they were believed to be of Punjabi origin.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the probe and confirmed the double homicide is linked to ongoing gang conflict in British Columbia. Police said both victims were Surrey residents and are believed to have had connections to organised crime.
Investigators later located a grey four-door sedan burned near Enver Creek School in the area of 144 Street and 84 Avenue, which they suspect may be connected to the shooting. No arrests have been made.
IHIT urged anyone with dashcam footage or other information from the area between 9:00 pm and 11:00 pm on May 10 to come forward. Police contact details are 1-877-551-IHIT or [email protected].
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke expressed concern about the rising violence and called for stronger anti-gang measures as the community reels from another deadly incident in the region’s ongoing gang conflicts.
