On December 7, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the Yukon–Alaska border Saturday afternoon, Earthquakes Canada reported. The quake was recorded at a shallow depth of about five kilometres. Yukon Highways and Public Works said the South Klondike Highway will be closed from kilometre 24 to kilometre 106 beginning at 5 p.m. and will remain closed overnight because of increased avalanche risk; the road will be reassessed in the morning and updates will be posted online. Professor Edwin Nissen of the University of Victoria’s Earth and Ocean Sciences department noted that similar earthquakes have occurred in the same area in 1899, 1979, 2002 and 2017. Authorities report no injuries or damage so far.
