Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone on Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the situation in West Asia, conveying India’s concerns and stressing the protection of civilians and the need for an early halt to fighting.
Modi posted on X after the call, underlining civilian safety as a priority and reiterating India’s appeal for hostilities to cease soon. He wrote: “Had a telephone call with PM Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current regional situation. Conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments and emphasised the safety of civilians as a priority. India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities.”
The conversation took place amid heightened regional tensions following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran and reports of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran then launched a series of missiles toward Israel and other countries in the region, further escalating hostilities across West Asia.
The call follows other diplomatic outreach by Modi. On Sunday night he spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, strongly condemning attacks on the Gulf country and expressing India’s solidarity with the United Arab Emirates.
