As President Vladimir Putin visits New Delhi, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praised the long-standing India–Russia relationship, saying Moscow has been a dependable partner on energy and defence. In an interview, Tharoor described the visit as “hugely significant” and stressed the importance of preserving established ties amid global uncertainty.
Tharoor highlighted recent examples of Russian support, citing substantial supplies of oil and gas and key defence imports — including the S-400 air defence system. He said such systems played a vital role during Operation Sindoor by helping protect Indian cities, including Delhi, from missile threats.
Underlining India’s foreign-policy position, Tharoor reiterated that New Delhi pursues strategic autonomy and independent bilateral relationships. He warned against interpreting closer ties with Russia as harmful to India’s relations with other powers, saying India has the sovereign right to choose partnerships that serve its national interest.
On the outcomes of the visit, Tharoor said agreements signed during the summit should deepen a crucial partnership without undermining ties with the United States, China or others. He argued India can maintain independent relations with all countries.
Putin is in India for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his first visit to the country in four years. The trip, running through December 5, is expected to advance cooperation in defence, trade, science and technology, and cultural and humanitarian exchanges. Former diplomat Arun Singh also noted the enduring political and defence importance of the India–Russia partnership.
