President Donald Trump said he was reviewing a new Iranian proposal to end the paused war but remained skeptical a deal would be reached, and warned U.S. military strikes could resume “if they misbehave.”
Speaking at Palm Beach International Airport as he boarded Air Force One en route to Miami, Trump said he was examining the proposal on the plane and would update reporters later. He described Tehran as not having “paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” a comment he also posted on social media.
“If they misbehave, if they do something bad, but right now, we will see. It’s a possibility that could happen, certainly,” he told reporters after a round of golf and a visit to his local dentist. An administration aide later said there would be no press conference in Miami.
No official details were released about the plan Trump was reviewing. Axios, citing two sources, reported the proposal — sent Thursday — would set a one-month deadline for negotiations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ending the U.S. naval blockade and permanently ending the conflicts in Iran and Lebanon. Only after that month, Axios said, would negotiators begin a further month of talks on Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump had rejected an earlier Iranian offer this week, saying it fell short of his expectations, but discussions have continued and a three-week ceasefire appears to be holding for now. Officials have not confirmed the Axios account, and it remained unclear whether Tehran’s new terms would satisfy the administration’s demands.
The president’s remarks underscore that while diplomacy is underway, the threat of renewed strikes remains contingent on Iran’s actions and on whether any agreement meets U.S. objectives.
