Dhaka, March 27 — At a state-organized program in Tanore Upazila marking Bangladesh’s 56th Independence Day and National Day on March 26, 2026, Member of Parliament Professor Mujibur Rahman (Rajshahi-1: Tanore-Godagari) and the Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami reportedly directed that passages from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita not be recited at the event.
The Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance (Central Executive Committee) condemned the instruction, calling it discriminatory and communal. The group, led by Secretary General Dr. Mrityunjoy Kumar Roy (Dr. M.K. Roy), said state functions customarily open with readings from religious scriptures and noted that, alongside the Quran, excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita have often been included at such events.
According to the Alliance, the message to omit the Gita was relayed to the Tanore Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). They said UNO Naima Khan ensured that the program went ahead with the planned Gita recitation and the Alliance expressed gratitude to her for that decision.
The Alliance has asked state authorities for clarification, called for accountability for the elected representative’s conduct, and urged the central leadership of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami to take appropriate action. The report is based on a syndicated feed from ANI.
