Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star in Gothenburg on Sunday, a distinction the Scandinavian country reserves as its highest honour for a head of government.
Instituted in 1748, the Order of the Polar Star recognizes notable contributions to Sweden or to Swedish interests, especially through public service and the effective performance of official duties, according to the order’s official description.
The decoration marks Modi’s 31st international honour.
Modi arrived in Sweden for a two-day visit and was welcomed at Gothenburg Airport by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The award ceremony underlines the growing diplomatic engagement between India and Sweden during the bilateral visit.
