New Delhi, December 3 — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Austrian diplomat Stefan Priesner as the UN Resident Coordinator in India. According to the UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan, Priesner assumed the role on 1 December 2025.
Priesner brings decades of experience in international development and organizational management, having advised governments on policy and led the design and delivery of large, multi-disciplinary development programmes.
Within the UN system, he most recently served as Resident Coordinator in Iran from 2021 to 2025. From 2017 to 2021 he was Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. Between 2013 and 2017 he held the dual role of Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan.
Earlier postings include UNDP Country Director in Bangladesh (2008–2012); Deputy Resident Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2004–2008); and Deputy Chief of the Subregional Resource Facility for South and West Asia in Nepal (2001–2004). Priesner began his UN career in 1997 with UNDP in Bhutan. Prior to joining the United Nations, he worked in the private sector.
He holds a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree in law from the University of Vienna.
Priesner succeeds Shombi Sharp as the UN Resident Coordinator in India.
