Modi Advocates Global Action Against Cyberfraud and Deepfakes
At the India Mobile Congress 2026, PM Modi emphasized the need for a worldwide framework to combat cybercrime and deepfake technology.
Call for Global Collaboration
During the India Mobile Congress 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong appeal for a unified international approach to combat cross-border cyberfraud and the rising menace of deepfakes. He urged key stakeholders—governments, technology firms, telecom operators, and financial institutions—to collaborate on solutions aimed at thwarting these threats before they reach individuals.
India's Experience and Leadership
Modi highlighted India's extensive experience in addressing cyberfraud, stating that the nation is well-positioned to share its insights globally. He emphasized that technology can only thrive through trust, noting that cybercrimes transcend national borders. "Criminal activities can involve perpetrators from multiple countries, impacting innocent victims elsewhere," he explained.
Deepfakes: An Emerging Threat
Another point of concern raised by Modi was the increasing sophistication of deepfakes. He asserted the necessity for collaborative international efforts to create a framework that can tackle these evolving dangers. "I encourage the GSMA and international telecom operators to unite in establishing a global system to prevent fraud before it trickles down to the general public," he said.
Digital Security is Crucial
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of enhancing the security measures surrounding telecom and digital technologies, as these elements are crucial for their rapid development. He pointed out that for an everyday user, trust relates to knowing the authenticity of communications, the security of transactions, and the protection of personal data.
Transformative Impact of Mobile Technology
Modi reflected on the evolution of mobile phones, which have transitioned from mere communication tools to vital instruments for governance and public service delivery. He remarked on the importance of reinforcing defenses against cyber threats, especially as the digital landscape continues to expand.
He also highlighted India's pioneering strides in digital governance, citing the Direct Benefit Transfer initiative that has facilitated approximately ₹50 lakh crore (500 billion) directly into beneficiaries' bank accounts. This approach has reportedly saved nearly ₹5 lakh crore from falling into the wrong hands.
Modi expressed his determination to eliminate unethical practices, posing rhetorical questions to the audience about the actions needed to curb such issues. "Those who have lost their ill-gotten gains won't celebrate our success. But I am resolved to see this through," he stated.
Transforming the Telecom Sector
Additionally, the Prime Minister noted that India is evolving from being a consumer of technology to becoming a creator, moving towards developing its own products and owning technology and intellectual property in the telecom sector.
