New Delhi, March 23 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said he held a constructive conversation with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul about the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Posting on X, Jaishankar wrote: “A useful conversation yesterday night with German FM Johann Wadephul on the West Asia conflict. Agreed to remain in touch.”
The exchange underlines continued India–Germany diplomatic engagement on regional security, with both sides stressing the need for dialogue and coordination to address the humanitarian and geopolitical consequences of the fighting. India has repeatedly urged restraint, diplomatic talks and humanitarian assistance as the situation in West Asia generates intense international concern and affects millions.
Separately, The Times of Israel reported, citing anonymous officials, that the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain believe Iran’s military capabilities must be degraded before a credible ceasefire can be achieved. According to that report, some Gulf states are considering joining an offensive to ensure Iran cannot continue to threaten the Gulf.
The report said Gulf officials were frustrated by the way the United States and Israel were conducting operations but had largely anticipated the wider regional fallout and had opposed the conflict’s outset. “Ending the war with Iran still in possession of the tools it is currently using to target the GCC would be a strategic disaster,” one Gulf official told the outlet. The officials cited by the Times of Israel also expressed skepticism that US and Israeli strikes alone would topple Iran’s regime.
