New Delhi — Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh on Saturday criticized the state of India‑US ties and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s closeness with former US President Donald Trump after the White House published its 2025 National Security Strategy (NSS). The 33‑page document credits Trump with mediating the May escalation between India and Pakistan that followed India’s Operation Sindoor — precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan‑occupied Jammu and Kashmir — carried out in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
In a post on X, Ramesh pointed out that the NSS repeats the claim in its introduction and again on page 8 that Trump “settled eight raging conflicts,” including the India‑Pakistan episode. He drew attention to a notable change from the 2017 Trump‑era strategy: the 2025 document no longer contains the explicit criticisms of Pakistan that appeared in the earlier text. The 2017 strategy had accused Islamabad of supporting militants who targeted US partners, pressed for stronger counterterrorism measures, and urged responsible stewardship of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal — references absent from the new NSS, Ramesh noted.
He ended his post with a sarcastic Hindi remark about the Modi‑Trump relationship: “Kya se kya hoh gaya bewafa tere dosti mein.”
The NSS nevertheless describes India as a critical partner and signals Washington’s intent to deepen cooperation with New Delhi across economic, technological and defence sectors. It calls for stronger commercial ties and encourages India to contribute to Indo‑Pacific security through continued collaboration in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue with Australia, Japan and the United States.
