Tehran, March 28 — Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Saturday that ‘life has returned to normal’ on Kharg Island and that the island is in ‘complete security,’ Iranian state media Fars reported.
Rezaei added that the Islamic Republic’s armed forces are at ‘full readiness’ and warned any aggression against Kharg would be met with a ‘decisive’ and ‘irreversible’ response.
The comments come as US planning reportedly includes possible deployment of elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. A CBS report, citing a source familiar with the planning, said a command component and some ground forces could be sent to the region, and that a US ground operation on Kharg has been among the options considered.
Iran has moved additional forces to the island and, according to a CNN report citing unnamed sources, has been preparing defensive measures around likely landing zones, including laying anti-personnel and anti-armor mines. Kharg Island is strategically vital, handling roughly 90 percent of Iran’s crude exports.
The report also recalled earlier remarks by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who said intelligence indicated ‘enemy countries’ were preparing to occupy one of Iran’s islands with support from a regional state. Ghalibaf wrote on X that Iranian forces are monitoring movements closely and warned that if such an action is attempted, ‘all the vital infrastructure of that regional country will be targeted with relentless, unceasing attacks.’
Reporting cited in this dispatch draws on syndicated material and accounts from ANI, CBS and CNN.
