New Delhi, May 15, 2026 — Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi told External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar that Tehran will protect security in the Strait of Hormuz and ensure the safety of commercial shipping, ANI reported.
Araghchi said in a post on X that Iran will continue to perform its historical duty as guardian of security in Hormuz and described Iran as a reliable partner on which friendly nations can depend for safe passage of trade.
He also condemned what he called US coercive measures, urging countries that face similar pressures to join together in resisting such tactics. Speaking at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in India, Araghchi called for collective action to push those practices ‘into the dustbin of history.’
Delivering Iran’s statement at the summit, he stressed the need to prevent political manipulation of international institutions and spoke about breaking Western hegemony over global governance structures.
The BRICS Chair’s Statement and Outcome Document from the meeting reaffirmed full support for India’s 2026 BRICS chairship, under the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.’ Ministers reviewed progress within the BRICS framework and backed deeper cooperation on strengthening capacities, promoting innovation, and advancing sustainable development and resilience.
