Brasilia, December 10 — During the visit of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi to Brazil, a tripartite memorandum of understanding was signed between the Indian Navy, the Brazilian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for exchange of information related to maintenance of Scorpène-class submarines and other naval vessels, the Indian Navy spokesperson said.
The MoU is designed to strengthen life-cycle support and promote experience sharing in maintenance, logistics and training. It will deepen cooperation between government agencies and industry in both countries and is expected to enhance Defence R&D collaboration and technological innovation for sustaining Scorpène-class submarines and other naval platforms.
Admiral Tripathi’s visit follows a November hosting of a 40-member delegation from Brazil’s Naval War College at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi, where discussions focused on expanding bilateral maritime training cooperation. Earlier, a Brazilian defence delegation led by Admiral Guilherme Da Silva Coasta, Head of Culture and Education of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, visited the College of Defence Management at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS).
The MoU comes against the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July visit to Brazil, during which he and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva agreed on a strategic roadmap to deepen bilateral ties over the next decade across five priority pillars, including defence and security. The joint statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs noted convergent views and strategic complementarities in defence and security, welcomed growing defence cooperation such as joint exercises and high-level exchanges, and highlighted the recent Agreement on the Exchange and Mutual Protection of Classified Information and the establishment of a Bilateral Cybersecurity Dialogue to further cooperation.
