New allegations of enforced disappearances have emerged from Pakistan’s Balochistan, local accounts and rights groups told The Balochistan Post.
According to the newspaper, 17-year-old student Shahek Baloch, son of Rahim Bakhsh of Buleda Mehnaz in Kech district, was reportedly taken on March 31 in Turbat. Family members and sources say people linked to a state-supported militia were involved in his detention; his whereabouts remain unknown.
Separately, 21-year-old student Noor Khan of Sardasht Kalanch in Pasni tehsil was allegedly detained on March 28. Witnesses reported that men believed to be affiliated with Military Intelligence stopped him at a van stand in Pasni, forced him into a vehicle and drove off. His fate is likewise unclear.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee has acknowledged both incidents, calling them part of a continuing pattern of enforced disappearances and urging international human rights organisations to pay attention and press for accountability.
In a rare positive development, Mumtaz Baloch, a fifth-semester Balochi student at the University of Balochistan who had gone missing earlier, returned home after being picked up from Kolwai Bazaar in Turbat’s Absar area during the third night of Eid. He had been unaccounted for several days; his family said they were relieved by his return even as anguish continues for other families of the missing.
