On February 28, Ambassador P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, met Austria’s Deputy Minister of Defence Arnold Kammel in New York to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation across peacekeeping, trade, technology and innovation. Austria’s Permanent Mission to the UN called the exchange a “dynamic discussion,” and both sides said they look forward to strengthening close bilateral and multilateral ties.
Ambassador Harish welcomed the talks on social media. The meeting followed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent discussions with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl‑Reisinger on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, underscoring continuing high‑level engagement between the two countries.
Earlier this year President Droupadi Murmu received the credentials of Austria’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Robert Zischg. Ambassador Zischg said he was honoured to assume his post and looks forward to enhancing Austria‑India cooperation grounded in strong people‑to‑people links and economic engagement; the Austrian embassy also marked the start of his official duties on social media.
In December, India and Austria held their 8th Foreign Office Consultations, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations — political engagement, trade and economic cooperation, science and technology, cultural exchanges and people‑to‑people ties. Both sides agreed to maintain regular official exchanges and to hold the next round of consultations in New Delhi at a mutually convenient time.
Separately, Austria has launched an initiative to attract Indian students to its leading technical universities to help meet growing demand for skilled labour and to deepen educational and people‑to‑people links between the countries. Together, these steps reflect a broadening partnership across diplomatic, economic and educational fields.
