The United States military says it destroyed the headquarters of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in a large-scale strike that has sharply raised tensions across the Middle East. In a social media statement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) accused the IRGC of being responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Americans over the past 47 years and framed the operation as cutting off “the head of the snake,” saying the strike left the IRGC without a central headquarters.
Israeli officials reported parallel strikes that targeted dozens of Iranian military command centers, including intelligence facilities, IRGC air bases and internal security sites. Israel said those attacks severely damaged Iran’s command-and-control capabilities and removed key personnel.
The operations followed reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader had been killed on Saturday. Explosions were heard in Tehran amid reports that Iran retaliated with missiles and drones aimed at Israel, US bases in the Gulf and other regional cities, fueling fears of a wider conflict.
CENTCOM characterized the action as intended to degrade the IRGC’s ability to carry out further attacks. Both US and Israeli officials have so far withheld full details on the precise locations struck, casualty figures and the broader operational plans behind the coordinated assaults.
