Kabul, March 26 — An Ariana Afghan Airlines flight veered off the runway while landing at Kabul International Airport Wednesday night, officials said. The aircraft came to a safe stop after technical control procedures were applied, and no passengers or crew were injured.
All passengers and flight crew were escorted to the terminal. Emergency technical teams have opened an investigation to inspect the aircraft, assess the scene and determine the cause of the runway excursion.
In a statement, Ariana Afghan Airlines said passenger safety remains its top priority and that it will review and strengthen measures to help prevent similar events. The airline noted that runway incidents occur worldwide and pointed to the recent Air Canada accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on March 22, which resulted in deaths and multiple injuries. Those reports said Air Canada Express flight 8646 collided with a Port Authority firefighting vehicle; two pilots were killed and dozens were injured, with many taken to local hospitals.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed condolences on social media and said the FAA was sending a team to support the NTSB’s investigation after the LaGuardia crash. LaGuardia remained closed until about 2 p.m. while investigators worked, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced it would send investigators to assist U.S. authorities.
