Sacred relics of Lord Buddha reached Ladakh on Wednesday ahead of a public exposition scheduled from May 1 to May 15. The relics were flown in on a dedicated Air Force aircraft and received at the Air Force Airport by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, accompanied by senior officials and security personnel.
Arriving under tight security, the relics were given a ceremonial welcome. The Lieutenant Governor described the occasion as significant, noting the reverence with which the remains were received and the elaborate arrangements made for their protection.
Airport authorities moved the relics from the technical area into secured living quarters at the facility, where they will be kept under safe custody until the exposition opens. The display will coincide with Buddha Purnima, and the organizers confirmed the relics will be opened to the public on May 1.
The opening ceremony is expected to attract senior Union government leaders, with the Home Minister scheduled to attend. Following arrival at the airport, the relics were transported on a specialised flatbed truck to Jivatsal, where they have been installed for the forthcoming display.
Officials say this marks the first time these particular relics have been relocated from their permanent site for an exhibition within India. Devotees regard the remains as embodying the living presence of Lord Buddha and his teachings, giving the event deep spiritual significance.
Organizers and local authorities view the exposition as both a major religious occasion and an opportunity to highlight India’s Buddhist heritage. Ladakh, with its famous monasteries and contemplative landscape, was chosen as the primary venue for the display.
Under the planned schedule, the relics will be on display in Ladakh until May 10, move to Zanskar for viewings on May 11 and 12, and return to Leh for a final ceremony on May 14. The relics are due to be returned to their permanent home on May 15. The sequence of events is intended to strengthen cultural ties in the region and boost spiritual tourism while ensuring strict security and custodial arrangements throughout the tour.
