New Delhi, April 7 (ANI) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated To Lam on his election as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and said he expects ties between New Delhi and Hanoi to strengthen under Lam’s leadership.
On X, Modi extended his “heartiest congratulations” to To Lam and expressed confidence that the long-standing friendship between the two countries will continue to deepen. He added that he looks forward to working closely with the Vietnamese president to further advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the benefit of both nations and the wider region.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Vietnam’s National Assembly confirmed To Lam, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, as state president for the 2026–2031 term. According to the report, all 495 deputies present voted in favor of the resolution on Lam’s election.
In his address to the assembly, To Lam emphasized the need to build a highly skilled workforce aligned with the country’s development goals, to strengthen institutions and governance, and to pursue a modern, inclusive and sustainable society that keeps pace with global political, economic and civilizational changes, Xinhua said.
Anadolu Agency, citing local outlet VnExpress, noted this is Lam’s second term after a brief earlier tenure in 2024. The outlet said Lam, during his roughly 18 months as party chief, has guided major policy directions aimed at accelerating Vietnam’s development, including goals to reach upper-middle-income status with modern industry by 2030 and to become a high-income developed country by 2045.
