Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, commended a recent U.S. operation to recover a downed F-15 pilot from inside Iranian territory, calling it a clear demonstration of American military capability and a sign of Iranian weakness.
Rubin told ANI that the mission, conducted deep in hostile territory, required technical and tactical precision few militaries could match. He described the operation as proof of U.S. potency and dismissed portrayals of Iran’s military strength as largely illusory, calling it a ‘paper tiger.’
U.S. forces mounted an extensive search-and-rescue after Iranian forces shot down the F-15 on April 3 amid escalating tensions. Officials said dozens of aircraft and special operations units were involved. One crew member, the pilot, was recovered quickly by helicopter; the weapons systems officer avoided capture for nearly 48 hours before being extracted in a subsequent operation that combined intelligence, deception and military precision.
Rubin emphasized the rarity and difficulty of such missions and argued that no other country could have carried it out, regardless of views on President Trump. He framed the rescue as both a tactical success and a symbolic demonstration of American reach.
He urged other global powers, particularly India, to reassess how they evaluate military capability and diplomatic ties. Acknowledging India’s economic grievances over rising energy prices following what he described as President Trump’s unilateral decision to go to war, Rubin said New Delhi should look beyond short-term economic concerns and accelerate military modernization as geopolitical competition intensifies.
Rubin also pointed to unconfirmed reports suggesting the missile that downed the F-15 may not have been of Iranian origin but supplied by Turkey. He warned that, if verified, such an allegation could provoke a major diplomatic crisis and strain NATO cohesion.
