Tehran [Iran], March 28 (ANI): Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Saturday that “life has returned to normal” on Kharg Island and that the island is in “complete security”, Iranian state media Fars News Agency reported.
Rezaei added that the Islamic Republic’s armed forces are at “full readiness” and warned any aggression against Kharg would be met with a “decisive” and “irreversible” response.
The report comes amid US planning reportedly involving deployment of troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. A CBS report, citing a source familiar with planning, said elements of the division, including a command component and some ground forces, could be sent to the region. The possibility of a US ground operation on Kharg has also been contemplated.
Iran, for its part, has moved additional forces to the island and, according to a CNN report quoting unnamed sources, has been laying traps including anti-personnel and anti-armor mines around areas where US forces might stage an amphibious landing. Kharg Island handles roughly 90% of Iran’s crude exports.
The article also referenced earlier comments by Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who said intelligence reports indicated enemy countries were preparing to occupy one of Iran’s islands with support from a regional country. He wrote on X that Iran’s forces are monitoring movements and warned that if such a step is taken, “all the vital infrastructure of that regional country will be targeted with relentless, unceasing attacks.” (ANI)
