Kabul [Afghanistan], March 26 (ANI): An Ariana Afghan Airlines aircraft veered off the runway while landing at Kabul International Airport on Wednesday night, officials said. No passengers or crew were injured.
The aircraft was safely brought to a stop following technical control measures, and all passengers and flight crew were transferred to the terminal. Emergency technical teams have begun investigations to assess the incident and determine its cause.
Ariana Afghan Airlines said such incidents are relatively common worldwide and cited a recent Air Canada accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on March 22, which resulted in fatalities and multiple injuries. Reports said the LaGuardia collision involved Air Canada Express flight 8646 and a Port Authority firefighting vehicle; two pilots died and 41 people were reported injured, with 39 passengers and two fire officers taken to local hospitals, according to CNN.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed condolences on social media and said the FAA was deploying a team to support the NTSB’s investigation. The facility remained closed until 2 pm while investigators worked. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada also announced it was sending investigators to assist US authorities.
The airline said passenger safety is its highest priority and that measures will be strengthened to prevent similar incidents.
