Bessent Dodges Ally Status Inquiry

In light of growing strains between the United States and Ukraine, recently intensified by comments from President Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faced questions regarding Ukraine’s classification as an ally on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” During the interview, he sidestepped the question three times.

Bessent stated, “We provide the three different things ... to Ukraine, so that’s what you do for an ally. We’re not providing those to Russia,” but did not explicitly label Ukraine as an ally.

Support for Ukraine

In the interview, Bessent detailed the support the U.S. offers Ukraine, which includes:

  • Intelligence assistance.
  • Support from Starlink for communications.
  • Facilitating NATO members in purchasing U.S. weaponry for resale to Ukraine.

He also criticized European nations for their slow response in supplying advanced military systems such as Patriot missiles, stating, “When President Zelenskyy asked for Patriots, NATO — the European members of NATO — they have plenty of Patriots. Why aren’t they forthcoming with the Patriots?”

Zelenskyy’s Warning

Moments before Bessent's interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reinforced Ukraine's position and the need for U.S. support. He warned that it would be a “historic mistake” for the U.S. to align with Russia.

The often complex relationship between Zelenskyy and Trump was highlighted when Zelenskyy expressed hope for a shift in Trump’s decisions, stating, “we want to trust him.”

Ongoing Tensions and Accusations

The tension has escalated further following Trump’s remarks about a perceived “energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia, raising doubts among European allies. Although Ukraine had paused its strikes on Russian energy facilities, they later resumed operations, accusing the U.S. of withholding crucial intelligence.

Zelenskyy also alleged that Elon Musk had restricted Starlink services, which Ukraine relies on for military communications. He claimed limitations were a direct interference in Ukraine’s defense efforts, suggesting a message from the U.S. government.

In response, Bessent admonished Zelenskyy for making such allegations, asserting, “President Trump and Secretary [of State Marco] Rubio have categorically said that no one in the Trump administration did that.”

Clarifications on Sanctions

A significant point raised during the interview was related to recent sanctions on Russia. Bessent denied that Trump had lifted any specific sanctions, instead clarifying that there would be a 60-day pause to review the situation, emphasizing, “The only thing that has been lifted is the diesel embargo.”

He also took issue with Zelenskyy’s framing of the conflict, calling it a “false binary.” Bessent reiterated that President Trump aims to end the war, advocating for a negotiated settlement rather than a unilateral insistence on victory from Ukraine.
