Japan lifted a tsunami advisory after an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck the country's northeast on Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said. The JMA had initially reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.7.

The quake struck at 11:44 a.m. local time (0244 GMT) off the coast of Aomori prefecture at a depth of about 20 km (12 miles). It followed a larger magnitude-7.5 earthquake that hit the same region late on Monday.

After Monday’s stronger quake, the government issued a special advisory asking residents across a wide area—from Hokkaido in the north to Chiba east of Tokyo—to remain on alert for an increased chance of another powerful earthquake within a week.

Friday’s tremor registered intensity 4 on Japan’s 1–7 seismic intensity scale.
