After reports that missiles from Iran struck Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial complex, former US President Donald Trump said Washington was not forewarned and blamed an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field for provoking Tehran’s response. Trump issued the remarks on Truth Social, accusing Israel of acting out of anger and saying the South Pars damage was limited to a relatively small section of the field.
Trump also said neither the United States nor Qatar knew the attack was coming. He warned that Israel would refrain from further strikes on South Pars unless Iran again targeted Qatar, and vowed that if Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities are attacked again, the US would respond with overwhelming force against Iran’s energy infrastructure. He said he did not want to authorize such destructive action because of the long-term consequences for Iran, but promised decisive retaliation if Qatar is struck once more.
Qatar’s Ministry of Defence reported that ballistic missiles hit Ras Laffan, causing extensive damage. Officials said the incident marked the second attack on the world’s largest LNG liquefaction complex within 12 hours. QatarEnergy confirmed that several LNG facilities were struck in the early hours of Thursday, triggering large fires and further damage. Emergency teams were sent immediately to contain the blazes, and the company reported no casualties.
In response to the strikes, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the military and security attaches at Iran’s embassy, along with their staff, persona non grata and ordered them to leave the country within 24 hours.
