Rajesh Kumar Singh's Term as Defence Secretary Extended to 2027
Union Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh has received a one-year extension, prolonging his service until October 2027.
In a recent decision, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted a one-year extension to Union Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. His new term will run until October 31, 2027, a decision aimed at ensuring consistent leadership in the Defence Ministry during critical times.
Background on Rajesh Kumar Singh
Rajesh Kumar Singh was appointed as Defence Secretary on November 1, 2024, succeeding Giridhar Aramane. Singh is a member of the 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Kerala cadre. Before assuming the role of Defence Secretary, he served as the Officer on Special Duty in the Defence Ministry, starting from August 20, 2024.
Significance of the Extension
The extension of Singh’s term is significant not only for the Defence Ministry but also for India's strategic military positioning. He is known for his active involvement in various high-level discussions, including matters concerning Indo-Pacific security cooperation, addressing aerial threats, and enhancing air defense capabilities.
Current Initiatives Under His Leadership
During his tenure, Singh has overseen several key initiatives aimed at strengthening India's defense infrastructure. Notably, the Defence Ministry recently signed a ₹770-crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the development of low-level radars. This advancement will enhance the Army’s air defense systems, specifically against emerging aerial threats such as drones.
Looking Ahead
The extension of his tenure ensures continuity in defense policy implementation, particularly at a time when the geopolitical landscape in the region is increasingly complex. Singh's experience and leadership will be invaluable as India navigates these challenges over the coming year.
The Centre confirmed this extension on October 24, 2026, citing it was made in accordance with the provisions outlined in the All India Service (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. Singh is expected to serve until further directives are issued, securing vital stability within the Ministry of Defence.
