Nagpur's Defence Hub: Delivering Drones and Exporting Rockets
Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited in Nagpur is enhancing India's defence capabilities with drone deliveries and international rocket exports.
Nagpur’s Growing Defence Manufacturing
Nagpur is transforming into a pivotal centre for indigenous defence production, following the successful delivery of key military assets by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited. This year, the company has made significant strides by supplying the Indian Army with 450 Nagastra-1 drones and exporting 1,000 Guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia.
The recent developments highlight India's commitment to bolstering its defence manufacturing sector, particularly in advanced weaponry and munitions.
Nagastra-1: A New Era of Drones
In October, Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited delivered the first batch of the Nagastra-1 loitering munition systems, designed to enhance the Indian Army's capabilities in anti-tank warfare. These systems were also part of Operation Sindoor, where they were deployed to neutralize terrorist targets across the border.
The Nagastra-1 enables precise strikes on enemy vehicles and can hover in an operational area while actively monitoring enemy movements. It features two operational modes: one that allows recovery and reuse, covering distances up to 25 km, and another kamikaze mode that can travel as far as 50 km to engage its target.
Advanced Features and Future Developments
Building upon the Nagastra-1, the upcoming Nagastra-2 promises to advance anti-tank operations further. With a sophisticated tandem shaped-charge warhead capable of penetrating up to 650 mm of armour, the Nagastra-2 is equipped with high-resolution cameras to function effectively in various light conditions.
Moreover, this new model addresses the challenges posed by electronic warfare, integrating Electronic Counter-Countermeasure technology to maintain targeting capabilities in jamming scenarios. The development of these systems positions India as a formidable player in the global defence landscape.
The Evolution of Pinaka Rockets
Alongside unmanned systems, Nagpur's role in developing the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system is expanding. Originally conceived by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka system has undergone significant enhancements. It is now capable of firing multiple rockets swiftly, striking enemy installations efficiently.
Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited has entered this domain, fulfilling orders amounting to approximately Rs 6,000 crore. The Pinaka's operational range has also improved, with the latest version hitting targets over 120 km away, showcasing India’s technological advancements.
International Outreach and Future Prospects
The recent export of 1,000 Guided Pinaka rockets to Armenia marks a significant milestone for the Indian defence industry and underscores growing global trust in Indian-manufactured weapon systems. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh initiated this export, indicating India's increasing footprint in international arms markets.
The success of the Pinaka rockets and Nagastra drones reflects a broader trend in India's defence strategy, focusing on self-reliance through public-private partnerships in manufacturing. As the ecosystem matures, more countries are showing interest in acquiring these indigenous systems, further establishing India's growing reputation as a reliable supplier of defence technology.
