Moscow, Feb 5, 2026 — The Kremlin said Wednesday that India is free to purchase oil from any country and that New Delhi’s efforts to diversify crude suppliers are not new. “We, along with all other international energy experts, are well aware that Russia is not the only supplier of oil and petroleum products to India. India has always purchased these products from other countries. Therefore, we see nothing new here,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop buying Russian oil and switch to sourcing crude from the United States and possibly Venezuela. The Kremlin reiterated it had received no formal statements from India about halting purchases of Russian oil.
Private business radio Kommersant FM also noted that, unlike President Trump, PM Modi had not said there was any agreement to end imports of Russian oil.
