New Delhi, December 10 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar paid tribute to C. Rajagopalachari on the leader’s birth anniversary, calling him a freedom fighter and one of India’s most influential public minds whose life and principles still guide the nation. Jaishankar posted on X that he was paying homage to Rajagopalachari and praised his enduring thoughts and ideals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Rajagopalachari — popularly known as Rajaji — on his 147th birth anniversary, describing him as a freedom fighter, thinker, intellectual and statesman, and one of the sharpest minds of the 20th century who valued human dignity. Modi shared archival material including a youthful photograph of Rajaji, the notice of his Cabinet appointment, a 1920s image with volunteers, and a 1922 copy of Young India that Rajaji edited while Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned.
Born on December 10, 1878 in the Madras Presidency, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari began his career as a lawyer before joining the Indian National Congress and taking part in major anti-colonial movements such as protests against the Rowlatt Act, the non-cooperation movement, and the Civil Disobedience movement. He served as the last Governor-General of India before the office was abolished in 1950, was elected to the Constituent Assembly from Madras and served on the minorities sub-committee, and received the Bharat Ratna in 1954.
