Tehran, March 29 (ANI) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that the United States and Israel could attempt to broaden the current confrontation by drawing other countries into hostilities or staging “false-flag” operations, Press TV reported. He made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis.
According to Press TV, Araghchi cautioned that Washington and Tel Aviv might expand what he described as “unprovoked aggression” against Iran “by compelling other countries to participate in the aggression or conduct false-flag operations against third countries.” He added that states have legal obligations under international law to prevent their territory or resources from being used to plan or support acts of aggression.
Araghchi, as quoted by Press TV, outlined what he called recent “crimes committed” by the US and Israel and said the attacks represented a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and amounted to military aggression against a UN member state. He urged nations to condemn what he termed illegal attacks and breaches of humanitarian law, warning that ignoring those actions would undermine international norms and moral order.
Press TV also reported Araghchi saying Iran will continue defensive measures against alleged aggressors, including strikes on military bases and facilities in the region. He linked the rising insecurity to the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran has acted to prevent the waterway’s use by its “aggressors” while seeking to ensure safe passage for other vessels.
Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis expressed concern about the escalation and said he hoped for a swift return to peace and stability in the region, Press TV added.
The comments came after a drone strike on the residence of Iraqi Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani. The United States blamed Iran-backed militias for the attack, while Iran called it a US-Israeli assassination attempt; Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps condemned the strike as a “clear act of terrorism” and accused the US and Israel, according to Press TV. The US State Department said the attack was carried out by “Iran’s terrorist militia proxies in Iraq,” Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Pigott said.
