Muscat, Oman, February 6 — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that Tehran is entering negotiations with the United States ‘with open eyes’ while making clear the Islamic Republic will not relinquish its rights. Araghchi posted the remarks on X after arriving in Muscat to lead talks with U.S. officials aimed at finding a fair resolution to Iran’s nuclear programme.
Araghchi said Iran approaches diplomacy mindful of the past year and committed to engaging in good faith, while standing firm on its rights. He called ‘equal standing, mutual respect and mutual interest’ the essential foundations of any durable agreement and said both sides must show genuine commitment.
Iran’s delegation includes Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Hamid Qanbari, along with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. The U.S. team is led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump. The talks were scheduled to begin later Friday amid a heightened U.S. military presence in West Asia and rising regional tensions.
Baghaei posted on X that discussions are moving forward ‘with strength’ and with the goal of reaching a fair, mutually satisfactory and dignified agreement. The engagement follows five rounds of indirect talks last year that were suspended after Israeli military actions on June 13, 2025 and subsequent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Iran reported it carried out counter-operations on June 24, 2025, saying those actions ended the aggression. Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported at least 1,064 deaths in Iran.
