India and Oman Collaborate on Advanced Drone Systems
IG Defence and MSA Global sign MoU to co-develop drone technologies for the Gulf region.
In a significant move to address the changing security landscape in West Asia, Indian defence firm IG Defence, headquartered in Noida, has entered into an agreement with Oman’s MSA Global. This memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed in Muscat, aims to foster co-development and localization of advanced defence systems suitable not just for Oman, but for the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
Collaboration Focus Areas
The partnership will look into the joint development and localization of three key platforms from IG Defence's range of indigenous technologies. These platforms include:
- KAL: A long-range, one-way attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) boasting a remarkable range of up to 1,000 kilometers.
- BAJ: An unmanned aerial interceptor system specifically designed for countering unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS).
- JWALA: A micro-missile system in development aimed at counter-drone operations.
This collaboration not only aims to bolster defence industrial cooperation but also seeks to enhance local manufacturing capabilities and develop homegrown defence technologies.
Signing Ceremony Highlights
The MoU was formalized between Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, the founder and CEO of IG Defence, and Colonel M S Atwal (Retd), the chairman of MSA Global. The signing was facilitated by the Department of Defence Production (DDP) under India’s defence ministry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Both companies envision this partnership as a means to merge India's strong defence engineering background with Oman’s industrial capabilities, aiming to meet the evolving needs of the GCC region.
Quotes from Leadership
Colonel Atwal emphasized the necessity of enhancing indigenous defence capabilities amidst a changing security environment in the Gulf, stating, "Our collaboration with IG Defence offers a valuable opportunity to develop advanced defence technologies, uniting India's engineering strengths with Oman's industrial infrastructure to promote local manufacturing ambitions."
CEO Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya elaborated on the strategic vision driving this partnership, asserting, "By aligning our innovative defence technologies with Oman's production capabilities, we aim to create systems that possess global relevance. Our motto is clear: Designed in India, Made in Oman, Built for the World."
Implications for the Defence Industry
This agreement represents a meaningful step toward deeper defence collaboration between India and Oman, focusing on leveraging indigenous technologies and manufacturing capabilities. It opens up new avenues for regional and global partnerships and reflects the increasing importance of synergistic industrial cooperation in advancing defence technology.
As both parties work together, the outcome could transform the defence landscape in the region, providing timely responses to emerging challenges while also supporting economic growth through local manufacturing and innovation.
