Hangzhou's Sci-Tech City: A Dynamic Hub of Innovation and Growth
Discover the remarkable transformation of Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City into a thriving center of technological advancements.
In recent years, Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City has transitioned from a modest agricultural area into a powerhouse of innovation, showcasing transformative technologies at various expos. This rapid development underscores the city’s emergence as a prominent national strategic hub for science and technology.
Showcasing Innovative Breakthroughs
A strong representation from Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City recently participated in an international expo, displaying their latest technological advancements. Key highlights included Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max, an omni-modal large model; the SG100, an industrial dexterous hand created by Hangzhou Heiman Technology; and Moxin Technology’s MoWorld 2.0, a cutting-edge 4D world model.
The exhibits illustrated a comprehensive AI industrial chain, emphasizing Hangzhou's robust technological capabilities and its vibrant innovation landscape.
From Humble Beginnings to Tremendous Growth
Established in 2011 in Yuhang District, Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City originally reported approximately RMB 20.3 billion in revenue from its enterprises. Today, this figure has surged to an astounding RMB 1.2 trillion, marking a growth of over 60 times the initial revenue, with an annual growth rate exceeding 30%.
This remarkable evolution is a result of a well-structured innovation ecosystem. The city is currently home to 29 publicly listed firms and has successfully attracted more than 7,400 skilled professionals from across the globe.
Supporting Talent and Startups
The Sci-Tech City prides itself on delivering comprehensive talent services that encompass recruitment, development, and retention strategies. Initiatives such as the Doctoral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy and collaborative postgraduate training programs with top universities have significantly boosted its talent pool, particularly among professionals under 35 years old, whose numbers have increased by over 8% annually over the last three years.
In a testament to its innovative environment, companies like Scantech—founded by overseas PhDs in 2015—have challenged foreign market dominance, successfully going public on the STAR Market in January 2025. Similarly, Zhiyun Health listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2022, illustrating how the city's ecosystem fosters the growth of promising startups.
Investment in Emerging Technologies
Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City has strategically invested in high-growth sectors. Notably, when brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) were still relatively unknown in 2018, the city successfully recruited BrainCo from Boston, which has since established itself as a leading BCI unicorn and a significant player among Hangzhou’s “Six Little Dragons.” In the first half of 2026, the city attracted 86 substantial industrial projects, with a total investment of RMB 14.456 billion.
The city’s service team remains proactive in addressing the needs of local businesses. One instance involved rapid coordination for Hangzhou Kangji Weijing Medical Robot to expedite funding processes, exemplifying their tailored support approach. The management committee facilitates frequent engagement with companies through initiatives like the “Wednesday Face-to-Face” dialogue sessions.
Fostering a Supportive Environment
To bolster financing options, Hangzhou has developed a comprehensive model that integrates investment, loans, and subsidies. In 2025, the region launched its first insurance products tailored specifically for AI commercialization and key biomedical equipment. So far, 18 intellectual property securitization products have generated RMB 1.792 billion for local tech firms, positioning the city at the forefront of financing innovation in Zhejiang.
The city features prominent venues like a city exhibition hall and a BCI demonstration center, highlighting products from leading companies such as BrainCo and Rokid. Major public projects, including the Future Sci-Tech Cultural Center and International Sports Center, are under concurrent development, enriching the community’s infrastructure.
The Road Ahead
Looking into the future, Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City plans to refine its industrial framework continuously. With an emphasis on talent development, original innovation, and the commercial translation of research, it aims to remain a catalyst for AI-driven industrial enhancement and specialized services, ensuring sustained high-quality growth for enterprises in the area.
