Kathmandu, March 29 — Former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and ex‑home minister Ramesh Lekhak were produced before the Kathmandu District Court today in connection with alleged atrocities during the Gen-Z protests.
Oli, who was taken to hospital after his arrest, appeared in court virtually. Lekhak was brought in by police from the District Government Attorney’s Office. Both men were detained on Saturday morning in relation to the September 8–9, 2025 protests, which an official inquiry says left 77 people dead and more than 2,400 seriously injured.
The unrest saw major state buildings and other properties torched and looted, including Singha Durbar, the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, the President’s Office, police stations, commercial properties and private residences. A commission of inquiry headed by Gauri Bahadur Karki found that then‑Prime Minister Oli, then‑Home Minister Lekhak and other officials bore responsibility and recommended follow-up action.
The new administration of Prime Minister Balendra Shah — whose first cabinet met on March 27 after the March 5 House of Representatives elections — moved to implement the commission’s recommendations immediately.
Police say Oli was taken from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur, and Lekhak from his home in Katunje, Bhaktapur, in the early hours of March 28. After being taken into custody, Oli underwent a medical examination at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and was admitted on doctors’ advice. Lekhak is being held at Police Battalion No. 2 in Maharajgunj.
The Balendra Shah government forwarded the commission’s report, which had previously been submitted to the administration led by Sushila Karki, to the Kathmandu District Police Complex for action. SSP Ramesh Thapa, chief of Kathmandu District Police, said the Home Ministry has handed over the report and police have begun implementing its recommendations.
