LUNA, Apayao — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officially launched the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) on Thursday, with Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. presenting the initiative at the BGVJR Memorial Gymnasium.

Event Focus and Activities

Under the theme "Science, Technology, and Digital Innovation Driving Food Security, Sustainable Energy, and National Resilience," the three-day event, taking place from November 5 to 7, aims to make technological advancements accessible to communities throughout the Cordillera Administrative Region.

The RSTW features numerous engaging activities such as Science and Technology Innovations (STI) exhibits and the DOSTCARtified Techno Bazaar hosted at the gymnasium. Attendees will also find interactive STI displays at Luna Central School, alongside various technology forums and student competitions designed to inspire the next generation.

Key Initiatives Launched

Prior to the official opening, the DOST and the Provincial Government of Apayao initiated several important projects on November 4. Notable among these was the delivery of advanced robotics laboratory packages to Apayao Science High School as part of Project EXCEL.

Other initiatives included the inauguration of the Apayao-Abulug River Basin Flood Forecasting and Warning System and Center, the launch of the MoVE Apayao Smart Mobility System, and the groundbreaking for the DOST-PHIVOLCS Northern Luzon Cluster Monitoring Center, which will focus on earthquake and tsunami tracking.

Enhancing Local Communities

The DOST also formalized partnerships aimed at strengthening efforts in local tourism, water security, and agriculture, as well as enhancing disaster resilience and supporting the weaving and textile sector in the region.

"As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Apayao shows us that it is possible to balance biodiversity conservation with technological advancement," Solidum stated during the event.

He highlighted that the adoption of green technologies and digital tools enables Apayao to safeguard its natural resources while simultaneously creating new economic opportunities. This includes sustainable tourism initiatives and livelihood programs that benefit local households.

The Path Ahead

The emphasis on innovation and sustainability during the RSTW underscores DOST's commitment to fostering progress in regional technology and agricultural practices. As communities engage with the showcased technologies, the hope is for a collaborative effort to improve food security and resilience against climate challenges.

With an impressive lineup of exhibits and programs, the event serves as a celebration of science and technology's potential to transform lives for the better in the Cordillera region.
