Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], December 11 (ANI) — The Dalai Lama left Dharamshala on Thursday morning bound for Mundgod, Karnataka, departing from Kangra Airport where numerous Tibetans and international devotees had gathered to see him off.
Mundgod is home to several Tibetan refugee communities, including Drepung Loseling Monastery and Gaden Jangtse Monastic College. Speaking to reporters at the airport, the Tibetan spiritual leader said he was traveling to South India and expressed gratitude to the Indian public, noting that Indians show genuine compassion wherever he goes.
The Dalai Lama will spend Thursday night in New Delhi and travel to Mundgod on Friday. He is on his winter break and is expected to return to Dharamshala in February 2026.
On Wednesday, the Tibetan government-in-exile observed the 36th anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s Nobel Peace Prize alongside the 77th World Human Rights Day. International delegations from the Czech Republic, Australia, France, Chile, New Zealand and Fiji participated in the commemoration, voicing support for Tibet and urging China to resume dialogue.
Around two thousand Tibetans — including officials of the exile administration, members of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, monks, nuns and students — gathered at Thekchen Choeling Tsuglakhang, the main Tibetan temple in Dharamshala. Foreign delegates and Tibetan leaders delivered official messages, and Tibetan artists presented cultural programmes during the event.
In the Kashag’s official statement, Sikyong Penpa Tsering said the convergence of the Nobel anniversary, Human Rights Day and the Year of Compassion called for deep reverence to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and warm greetings to supporters of Tibet worldwide.
