New Delhi — Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides was given a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour upon his arrival in New Delhi on Thursday, following the Mumbai leg of his state visit. He was received by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta as part of the high-profile reception.
The visit, taking place from May 20 to 23 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is President Christodoulides’ first trip to India in his current role. Indian officials described the visit as building on momentum from Prime Minister Modi’s landmark trip to Cyprus in June 2025 and as a signal of both countries’ intent to deepen bilateral ties.
Christodoulides is accompanied by a senior delegation that includes Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, and leading government and business figures. The four-day programme began in Mumbai, where he received a ceremonial greeting from Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and took part in a business forum focused on expanding trade and investment links.
In New Delhi, the leaders are expected to hold wide-ranging talks aimed at strengthening cooperation across trade, investment, technology, education, culture, mobility, defence and security. Emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, fintech, innovation and joint research are set to feature prominently on the agenda, alongside discussions on regional and global developments and coordination in multilateral fora.
State-level ceremonial events are planned as part of the visit. Prime Minister Modi will host a luncheon for the visiting president, and President Droupadi Murmu will receive Christodoulides at Rashtrapati Bhavan and host an official banquet. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to meet the Cypriot president during his stay.
Officials noted the added diplomatic resonance of the visit while Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. With India and Cyprus preparing to mark 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, the visit is being portrayed by both sides as a strategic opportunity to broaden bilateral cooperation and to strengthen India’s engagement within the wider India–European Union framework.
