Recently, Islamabad hosted the 2026 China-South Asia Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development Cooperation, an event that brought together over 100 participants from various sectors, including government officials, diplomats, and scholars representing countries such as China, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Insights from China’s Success

During the opening remarks, Chaudhry Armaghan Subhani, the state minister from Pakistan's Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, highlighted the invaluable lessons that Pakistan could learn from China's successful poverty alleviation strategies. He pointed out that China's systematic planning and targeted measures have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

Subhani specifically mentioned the outcomes of the first phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and related socioeconomic initiatives, which have positively impacted local communities in key areas like infrastructure, health services, and education. He asserted that upgrades linked to CPEC 2.0 and the Global Development Initiative (GDI) hold the potential for significant advancements in the well-being of local populations.

Collaborative Efforts for Development

Zafar Uddin Mahmood, who serves as the Prime Minister’s special representative on China Affairs, echoed these sentiments by stating that China's remarkable accomplishments in poverty alleviation offer a framework that developing countries can utilize. He urged South Asian nations to leverage their demographic strengths and economic opportunities effectively.

According to Mahmood, enhancing collaboration with China across diverse sectors is essential for creating job opportunities and improving the standards of living, thereby making collective strides in poverty reduction.

Future Directions and Digital Innovations

A representative from the China International Communications Group (CICG) emphasized the importance of tailored approaches to poverty reduction that fit the regional context of South Asia. The representative encouraged the establishment of model projects reflective of each country’s unique situation and advocated for stronger cooperative mechanisms and exchanges.

Moreover, they urged South Asian countries to harness digital technologies as innovative tools for fueling progress in poverty alleviation and development.

China’s Commitment to Global Development

The Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, remarked on the GDI’s introduction in 2021, wherein poverty reduction stands out as the foremost priority among its areas for cooperation. He reassured attendees that the practical partnership between China and Pakistan is progressing steadily, paving the way for advancing governance experiences that China is eager to share.

Throughout the forum, thematic sessions allowed experts and scholars from China and South Asia to engage in conversations about various facets of poverty reduction, inclusive development, emergent development drivers, and regional cooperation.

The forum was organized under the auspices of the CICG and the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, with collaborative efforts from the CICG Center for Europe and Asia and Pakistan's Understanding China Forum.
