Anthropic Tightens Restrictions on Claude's Game Creation Features
Anthropic has revised Claude Code to prevent the creation of direct video game clones, encouraging originality instead.
New Restrictions on Game Creation
Anthropic has announced updates to its AI tool, Claude Code, aimed at curbing the creation of clones of existing video games. According to reports, the move comes amid a surge in AI-generated content within the retro gaming community, including various decompilations and ported versions of classic games.
Focus on Originality
While developers can still utilize Claude Code to craft new gaming experiences, the company is taking a firm stand against re-creating specific titles. A recent user post on X revealed two new guidelines included in Claude Code's system prompt, emphasizing the importance of originality.
Updated Guidelines
The updated prompt states: “Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user’s own designs and assets. Don’t build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is named or called original.” This change reflects Anthropic's commitment to fostering creativity while respecting intellectual property rights.
Company Response
Addy Osmani from Anthropic responded to inquiries about the prompt changes without confirming the exact language but reiterated that the objective was to prevent any infringement of existing intellectual property. The modifications were implemented in the latest version of Claude Code, known as Opus 5.5.
“We added two sentences to Claude Code’s prompt on Opus 5.5 to steer it away from recreating someone else’s specific game because using Claude to infringe on intellectual property is against our usage policy,” Osmani stated.
He emphasized that projects creating original games or based on custom designs are still fully supported by Claude Code. The company plans to keep refining its approach to balance innovation and protection of original works.
Looking Ahead
As Anthropic continues to evolve its AI capabilities, they are open to feedback from users. Osmani mentioned that if Claude rejects any project inspired by a user's own designs, they encourage users to reach out for further assistance.
The company has also been asked whether there will be updates to other Claude system prompts in the future, showing their ongoing commitment to engaging with their user base and addressing emerging challenges in the gaming community.
