Canva Appoints Willix Halim to Lead Southeast Asia Expansion
Willix Halim joins Canva as CEO for Southeast Asia, bringing extensive e-commerce experience to drive growth.
Canva, the acclaimed Australia-based design platform, is expanding its presence in Southeast Asia by appointing Willix Halim as the new CEO for the region. Halim, known for his role as the co-founder and former CEO of Indonesia's e-commerce giant Bukalapak, has been advising Canva for a year prior to stepping into this key leadership role about three months ago.
Leveraging E-commerce Expertise
In his new position, Halim is expected to implement effective market localization strategies to bolster Canva's operations. His extensive experience in the mobile-first e-commerce realm of Southeast Asia will be crucial for the design platform, where mobile devices are the primary means of accessing services.
Halim commented on this trend, stating, “In e-commerce and across various industries, the mobile app-first approach must be adopted in Southeast Asia. The principles applied in e-commerce are directly transferrable to Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, especially given that a significant number of users in developing markets utilize Android and iOS.”
Strong Growth in User Engagement
Recent data reveals that in Southeast Asia, 50% of presentations on Canva begin on mobile devices; this statistic jumps to two-thirds in Indonesia and three-fifths in the Philippines. This trend underlines the growing importance of mobile engagement for Canva’s user base.
Canva's performance in Southeast Asia is impressive, with annual recurring revenue tripling since 2022 and monthly active users more than doubling in the same timeframe. Though the company has not disclosed specific revenue figures or user numbers, it does assert that its investments are driving strong growth in this strategic market.
Regional Opportunities and Challenges
Halim is optimistic about the future contributions of Southeast Asia to Canva's overall revenue, even as countries in the region experience various stages of economic development. “When GDP grows at 5%, disposable income typically increases, enabling consumers to spend more,” he explained. This economic growth, alongside a burgeoning base of small and medium-sized businesses using Canva for marketing and social media, promises exciting prospects.
In addition, educational partnerships in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are set to enhance Canva's reach, boasting an active user base of at least 60 million. The Philippines, for instance, hosts Canva’s second largest campus globally, emphasizing the regional significance of its operations.
Facing AI Advancements
As Canva celebrates its growth in Southeast Asia, it simultaneously navigates the challenges presented by the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). With competition on the rise, notably from companies offering AI-powered design solutions, Canva has increased its focus on integrating advanced AI capabilities into its products. Currently, 300 employees are dedicated to enhancing Canva’s AI offerings, with one-third of that team working directly on proprietary AI models.
Despite these competitive pressures, Canva continues to record impressive growth. The company has reported over 100% year-on-year increases in enterprise revenue, indicating ongoing demand and resilience in the market.
Future Prospects
Canva, which launched in 2013 as an accessible alternative to the Adobe Suite, has been at the forefront of making graphic design easier for users. However, the shifting landscape of the industry has led to a reevaluation of its valuation by investors, with notable cuts reported in August. This has prompted speculation regarding Canva's future IPO plans, which executives have indicated may occur in 2027. While no specific details were provided, Halim and Canva's chief product officer, Cameron Adams, emphasized the importance of taking time to navigate the current market changes effectively.
“Being a private company allows us to focus on long-term goals, which is essential in this rapidly changing environment,” Halim reflected.
