Athenahealth is taking a significant step in healthcare technology by launching a new feature that allows patients to interact with Anthropic’s AI, Claude. This integration aims to enhance patient understanding of their medical records while prioritizing data security.

Secure Access to Health Information

The newly introduced system, known as the AthenaPatient Model Context Protocol (MCP), connects patients' health records to the AI. To use this feature, patients need to log in using their secure Athenahealth credentials. Claude can assist in answering queries about various health-related topics—ranging from lab results to medication history.

Subscription Details

Currently, the AthenaPatient MCP feature is available exclusively to users enrolled in Claude Pro and Claude Max subscriptions, which cost $20 and $100 per month, respectively. However, patients should be aware that not all will have their data shared with Claude automatically. They have the control to decide which health information they wish to allow access to, and they can revoke this access at any time.

Understanding Your Health Data

Upon authorization, Claude can utilize a broad spectrum of patient data, including vital statistics, past visit histories, and medical conditions, to provide informative responses to patients' inquiries. It’s important to note that while Claude can help patients better understand their health data, it is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Sam Lambson, vice president of product management at Athenahealth, emphasizes that patients are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals for any diagnostic or treatment questions. The integration intends to clarify information rather than give direct medical guidance.

Growing Trend in Healthcare Technology

This collaboration is part of a broader movement within the healthcare industry where technology companies are forming alliances to enhance patient experiences. Similar partnerships have emerged, such as Microsoft's agreement with the Mayo Clinic and Boston Children's Hospital's collaboration with OpenAI.

According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, approximately 34% of U.S. adults have sought medical advice from AI chatbots. This partnership aims to offer a secure method of accessing vital health records by demanding patient authentication before allowing the AI to retrieve any information.

The Value of Health Data

The importance of health data is continuously rising, making it a valuable asset for tech companies. This trend represents a larger vision of leveraging vast datasets to develop AI models that can improve healthcare outcomes. However, the focus of the Athenahealth-Anthropic partnership appears to be more about reducing the administrative workload for healthcare professionals and enabling efficient patient management.

Looking Ahead

The future impacts of this integration on patient outcomes remain to be seen, but current surveys reveal that many Americans prefer human oversight over AI in clinical settings. As the healthcare landscape evolves, tools like AthenaPatient MCP could play a pivotal role in managing patient queries and streamlining communication between healthcare providers and patients.
