New Delhi, June 4 (ANI) — India has expressed deep condolences on the death of former Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, saying he will be remembered as a friend of India for his contributions to bilateral ties. Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary for Overseas Indian Affairs, Consular, Passport and Visa divisions at the Ministry of External Affairs, visited the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in New Delhi to sign the condolence book.
The MEA posted on the social media platform X that the government expresses its sincere condolences to Hadi’s family and to the people and government of the Republic of Yemen. The statement noted Hadi’s role in strengthening India-Yemen relations.
Former President Hadi died on May 28 in Riyadh at the age of 80, according to reports from the Yemeni state broadcaster operating from Saudi Arabia. Born on September 1, 1945, Hadi rose through Yemen’s military and political ranks and was appointed vice president in 1994.
He became president in 2012 as part of a Gulf-sponsored transition after long-serving President Ali Abdullah Saleh stepped down. As president, Hadi undertook reforms of Yemen’s defense and security sectors, but his tenure coincided with a turbulent political transition and a prolonged civil conflict.
Houthi forces advanced on state institutions in Sanaa, and in January 2015 Hadi was placed under house arrest after the presidential residence was encircled. He left for Aden in February 2015, retracted his resignation and appealed for international support. In March 2015 a Saudi-led Arab coalition launched military operations against Houthi forces, deepening the conflict.
In 2022, in an effort to unify anti-Houthi factions and revive stalled peace talks, Hadi transferred executive authority to an eight-member Presidential Leadership Council.
