US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that the US‑India relationship is central to Washington’s strategic priorities and reiterated America’s commitment to strengthening the partnership.
Speaking at the dedication of the US Embassy Support Annex Building in New Delhi, Rubio called the relationship “a cornerstone” of cooperation and said his visit was aimed at reaffirming and building on those ties.
He signalled that further collaborative steps are likely soon: “We think in the months ahead, we’re going to have even more exciting and new announcements to make about the development and the strengthening of the relationship between the two countries,” he said.
Rubio began his first official trip to India in Kolkata on Saturday before travelling to the capital for high‑level meetings, including a planned call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed the arrival and outlined the visit’s priorities on X, writing that trade, technology, defence, the QUAD, and other items would be discussed and advanced during the visit.
The secretary is also scheduled for extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with officials expecting a focus on trade, energy cooperation, inbound investment, critical emerging technologies, and people‑to‑people ties.
The meetings come at a time of growing QUAD engagement among India, the United States, Japan and Australia, where the partners are deepening cooperation on maritime security, resilient supply chains and other shared challenges.
