Nikos Christodoulides, President of Cyprus, arrived in Mumbai on May 20 to begin a four-day State Visit to India from May 20–23 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip is the Cypriot leader’s first visit to India in his current capacity, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The president is travelling with a high-level delegation that includes Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, senior officials and business leaders. The visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s landmark trip to Cyprus in June 2025—the first Indian prime ministerial visit to the Mediterranean nation in more than two decades—and comes while Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Christodoulides received a ceremonial welcome on arrival in Mumbai and was greeted at the airport by Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Officials said talks between PM Modi and President Christodoulides will cover an expanded bilateral agenda, including trade and investment, technology, education, culture, mobility, defence and security, and emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, fintech, innovation and research. The leaders are also expected to discuss regional and global developments and coordination in multilateral forums.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted the visit underlines close, time-tested ties and strong people-to-people links between India and Cyprus and reflects growing momentum in the partnership.
During the stay, PM Modi will host a luncheon for the visiting leader, and President Christodoulides will be received by President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to meet the Cypriot president.
In Mumbai, Christodoulides will take part in a business forum aimed at deepening commercial and investment ties and encouraging greater economic engagement between the two countries.
India and Cyprus will mark 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. The visit is being viewed as an important step to strengthen bilateral cooperation and to advance ties within the broader India–European Union framework.
