Newcastle, Northern Ireland — A seagull left a messy reminder during King Charles III’s visit to Newcastle on Wednesday, dropping droppings that struck the monarch’s suit jacket and splattered others nearby, including members of the press.
The king took the incident in good humor. He quipped, “It’s well it didn’t land on my head,” according to witness Irene Marting, who met the composed monarch shortly afterward.
“Being hit by a sea gull, it’s supposed to be good luck,” Marting said. “We’re so thrilled he’s come to Northern Ireland to see us and it’s really nice to see him in Newcastle.” The visit included a greeting of well-wishers outside the Newcastle Community Cinema.
Earlier in the day, during a visit to a local food pantry, the king picked up a roll of toilet paper and remarked on its importance, saying it was “very important.”
The lighthearted episode drew smiles from onlookers and underscored the informal moments that can punctuate royal engagements. (AP)
