Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with a vibrant Bengali cultural reception when he arrived at his hotel in Gothenburg on May 17. Performers in traditional attire presented lively dances and rituals — including elements reminiscent of aarti and classical folk forms — as members of the Indian diaspora cheered and waved the tricolour, creating a festive atmosphere outside the venue.
Accompanied by a delegation of officials, the Prime Minister interacted warmly with the artists, acknowledging the reception with a namaste and appearing pleased as he conversed with attendees. The showcase highlighted how the Indian community in Sweden preserves and celebrates its cultural roots far from home.
Nivedita, a member of the diaspora, described the encounter as a ‘‘dream come true,’’ noting that Mr. Modi connected with the gathering by speaking in Bengali. She said the diaspora members present — Bengalis and other Indians living in Sweden — were thrilled by the visit and expressed their support and congratulations for the Prime Minister.
Inside the hotel, the programme continued with a traditional Indian dance and an orchestral recital, further underscoring the cultural welcome arranged for the state guest. The reception served as a colourful prelude to the official portion of the visit.
The stop in Gothenburg is part of Mr. Modi’s ongoing five-nation tour, following diplomatic engagements in the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands. While in Sweden, he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and meet senior industrial leaders to advance cooperation in trade, technology and sustainable development.
Gothenburg, known for its strong industrial base and innovation ecosystem, has a dynamic Indian diaspora that turned out enthusiastically for the state visit. The cultural greeting reflected robust people-to-people ties and the community’s role in strengthening India-Sweden relations.
