Israel said it killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of Hamas’ military wing and one of the architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks, in a strike in Gaza City on Friday, the military announced.
The army identified Haddad as one of the last senior commanders who helped plan and carry out the October 7 attacks that sparked the Gaza war. Israeli officials said he took over the role after the previous commander, Mohammed Sinwar, was killed.
Haddad’s family confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Saturday. Local reports and images showed mourners in Gaza City carrying a body they identified as Haddad during funeral proceedings.
The strike and announcement come as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains in place but faces obstacles. Negotiations have been hindered by unresolved issues, including the proposed disarmament of Hamas, which has stalled progress toward a more durable agreement.
Israeli and Palestinian officials have offered limited comment beyond the military statement and family confirmation. The development is likely to shape the immediate security and diplomatic landscape as both sides weigh next steps amid ongoing tensions.
