Washington DC [US], March 27 (ANI): The United States is considering sending an additional 10,000 ground troops to West Asia despite talks with Iran, the Jerusalem Post reported, citing a Wall Street Journal article released Thursday.
The WSJ, according to the Jerusalem Post, quoted Department of War officials saying the deployment would likely include both infantry and armoured vehicles and could involve the 82nd Airborne Division, already in the region. While analysts have suggested the 82nd’s deployment targets Iranian strategic sites such as Kharg Island, the report said the destination or bases for any additional forces remain unclear.
“All announcements regarding troop deployments will come from the Department of War,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly said. “As we have said, President Trump always has all military options at his disposal.” A US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson declined to comment to the WSJ.
The developments come as the US-Israel and Iran conflict enters its fourth week. President Trump had signalled a temporary pause in operations against Iran after Tehran sought a seven-day pause on strikes targeting its energy infrastructure; Trump extended that to a 10-day pause until April 6, though combined US-Israel strikes have continued.
Separately, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of the 83rd wave of Operation True Promise 4 in the early hours of Friday, saying it targeted key American and Israeli military installations across the region using advanced missiles and drones.
Amid the evolving security situation, Iran formally informed the United Nations about media reports alleging US and Israeli plans to assassinate senior Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Press TV reported. Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, expressed deep concern in an official letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council. (ANI)
